First off, I think a quick description of the Dustball Rally event is in order. The 2010 Dustball Rally, in its fifth iteration, is a 1500 mile event. The 1500 miles are covered over three days…two 750 mile driving days with a <del>party</del> rest day in the middle. A great part of Dustball is it being a gimmick rally. A gimmick rally is basically a road rally where the object is to find answers to clues, which sometimes even direct you along the appropriate route. The gimmick portion, while being a lot of fun, serves a bit to keep the speeds in check. To describe the Dustball Rally best, it is a cross between the Cannonball Run movie and a scavenger hunt.

Some more background might be in order too. A little over a year ago, I had never heard of the Dustball Rally. I helped a friend, of Team Hall & Nass fame, apply the Dustball decals to their Corvette prior to the rally. That day I was hooked. His experience last year brought about the genius idea of purposely running in a pack of cars this year, all with a method to communicate while on the road. So that’s what we did. Team Hall & Nass labeled us the Hamthrax Avoidance Alliance. Our mascot…Pirate Pig.

After a Thursday night drivers’ meeting in El Paso at La Terraza Mexican Restaurant, Friday morning began with taking some photos, receiving the gimmick packet, and hitting the road having no idea where we would end up that night or the route to get there. After many calculations, finding many gimmicks, and not finding a few, we arrived at our checkpoint that afternoon in Santa Fe, Only then did we discover the Warwick Denver Hotel was the destination. I couldn’t have been happier, as I absolutely love Colorado. After a (too) long break, we were back on the road and the hunt. Our alliance arrived toward the back of the pack and after midnight in Denver. From this tremendous first day of driving, I learned two things for (hopefully) next year. One, gas and gimmick stops need to be just that, gas and gimmick stops…not social hour. Also, unless part of the event planning, never ever sit down with a group for a meal. However, aside from a few people making a donation the Colorado highway fund, there were no problems. It was one of the best days I’ve ever spent in a vehicle.

Saturday, some attended a scenic mountain drive. Some had leisurely lunches and dinners. All participated in enormous amounts of bench racing. We even discovered that Cyprus Hill was staying with us at the Warwick Hotel while in town for the Mile High Music Festival. That night was an all-out exclusive party at a Denver night club. While quite eventful, Saturday was a much needed day of rest before another full day and another 750 miles hunting gimmicks back to El Paso.

Sunday morning we met in a local park and started off again after receiving our gimmick packets for the return trip. I was a bit bummed to see we’d head straight out of Colorado, with no back road aside from Raton Pass over the state line. However, the brilliant route through the New Mexico mountains easily made up for it, and those who had hamthrax encounters Friday night were happy to get out of the state. Sunday the Hamthrax Avoidance Alliance was much better about taking less time at gas and gimmick stops. We even were completely successful at our primary goal of Hamthrax avoidance! While a downpour of rain toward the end of the day slowed us down and motivated many of us to skip over a good portion of gimmicks, we made much better time. Let’s just say the open <del>runways</del> roadways of New Mexico really were quite helpful in having a higher average speed for the day. Our new-found diligence served us well that day, and the HAA comprised most of the top 10 cars getting to the finish line. Let me remind you Dustball is a rally and not a race. So obviously our finish order had no importance whatsoever. It’s all about the gimmicks. Needless to say, we didn’t win the gimmick portion. Maybe next year.

I knew I’d enjoy Dustball, however I didn’t expect to immediately be addicted and craving next year’s event before I even got home. All in all, my car covered over 2800 miles in four days of driving. It was an honor to participate and an honor to meet the grandson of Willie Williams, the legend behind the idea and spirit of the Dustball Rally. Team Prostin, without a doubt, deserved the spirit of Dustball award. Also, kudos to Team Hazmatt for winning the gimmick portion and being the overall rally winners. The Dustball Rally organizers, Andy and Lea, did a superb job planning and implementing such an event. My many thanks to you both and all involved as well as to my co-driver Rob. We had a great time and you were an invaluable asset, even if you never wore pants.

And for the record, no, I was not passed by a Prius!

As you may recall, before my job hurled me to the other side of the globe and into a catatonic state, I had the opportunity to drive the 2010 Infiniti G37 Convertible 6MT for a couple days thanks to Crest Infiniti in Plano, Texas. Read my first impressions here. Thanks so much to Crest Infiniti, and specifically Thomas Bies, for being so patient in awaiting this review. I do appreciate it. Moving on to the car, I’ll first whet your appetite with the basics:

From Infinitiusa.com:
•	3.7-liter (3,696cc) V6, aluminum-alloy block and heads. Low-friction coated pistons
•	325 hp @ 7,000 rpm
•	267 lb-ft @ 5,200 rpm
•	Close-ratio 6-speed manual with short-throw shifter
•	Independent double-wishbone with coil springs over Dual Flow Path® shock absorbers, stabilizer bar (front). Independent multi-link with coil springs over Dual Flow Path® shock absorbers, stabilizer bar (rear)
•	Aluminum 4-piston opposed front calipers with 14.0 x 1.3-inch ventilated discs/2-piston opposed rear calipers with 13.8 x 0.8-inch ventilated discs; 4-wheel, 4-channel ABS
•	10-spoke, 19 x 8.5-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with 225/45R19 W-rated summer performance tires (front), 19 x 9.0-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with 245/40R19 W-rated summer performance tires (rear)

The G37 Convertible is quite simply a stunning vehicle. If you want a fun, open-air car yet don’t want to be embarrassed at the valet stand, you can’t go wrong. You’ll get a lot of stares and compliments driving this car. It’ll take an extra $20k-$30k to even come close with another vehicle in the looks department. The interior holds up its end of the bargain as well. The leather is comfortable and the surfaces and dash controls certainly fall into luxury car levels of quality. It’s a great place to spend some time, especially if you enjoy some music while you drive. The Bose system and its 13 speakers are tremendous and sound beautiful even at highway speeds with the top down.

I think what the car boils down to is this: If you are reading this but glazed over the stats above, then this car is like heaven on wheels. The G37 Convertible is quite simply a gorgeous vehicle both top up and down. That is likely what appeals to you the most. It’s luxurious, quick, and fun to drive. However if you understood all the stats above, you might enjoy the 370Z Roadster or the G37 Coupe better. The almost 4,000 lbs can definitely be felt. However, if it’s a hard-top convertible you’re after, some extra weight is necessary, and likely not a concern at all. Like any car, there are things the Infiniti G37 Convertible 6MT does well and some it does not. For those interested in a 4-seat convertible, you won’t be disappointed. Your interests are most likely exactly what the G37 Convertible does quite well.

Rush-hour commuter: While most would likely opt for the 7-speed automatic transmission for their commute, the 6-speed manual is about as good as manual transmissions get. Shift throws are short, precise, and remains one of my personal favorites. There’s just enough of a mechanical feel to it that you never have a question whether it is fully in gear. Smooth launches from any rpm are effortless and the easiest to obtain of any G or Z I’ve ever driven. The clutch is very light and easy to depress. It might be a bit light for performance driving but is near perfect for around town.

Highway cruiser: The G37 Convertible really excels here. With the top down, wind noise is not obnoxious at all…bordering on quiet at moderate highway speeds. A conversation is easily carried without having to raise your voice much at all. The wind is hardly noticeable in front; however a (small) passenger in the back definitely gets blown around a bit. The seats are quite comfortable and most likely would remain to be on a long road trip.

Grocery getter: While the G37 Convertible may be a fun car for a quick jaunt to the store, don’t buy anything if you want the top down on the return trip. The trunk space is annihilated by the retractable hard-top when down. Luckily for you though, there are back seats which will come in quite useful for your bread and milk.

My wife and son on our way to some Jimmy Buffet tailgating

Family & friends hauler: Normally, here’s where I would laugh at the thought of hauling people around in a convertible. However, there is a back seat, so why not? Well, as you might imagine, the back seat is no Mercedes S-class. You can fit an actual person back there though in a pinch, and it’s not that bad as long as said person isn’t nearing 6ft tall or more. Kids will be quite comfortable in back, and a forward facing child seat does fit. I will say though, it’s not worth the effort to try and squeeze the child seat in through the door. Just make life easier by dropping the top and then plopping the seat into the back.

Occasional hoon-mobile: The G37 Convertible 6MT is surprisingly fun to drive, and for the average Joe, perfect for the occasional back-road romping. I had the opportunity to play with some Honda S2000s on some back roads. It was a beautiful evening, and the G37 felt right at home as it was tossed around the countryside. Yet, for someone who has a bit of performance driving background, a few short-comings will be noticed.

Track toy: While I would not discourage anyone from taking their new G37 Convertible to the track, this is far from a good choice for a track toy. I mentioned there were short-comings. Some are expected…maybe even inevitable due to the nature of a hard-top convertible. The steering is a bit numb. There is very little communication from the tires to the steering wheel as to what the car is doing. While gently tossing the car about through some curves, the G37 stays flat and very sports-car-like. However, if you start to push it a bit more, you’ll definitely begin to feel the weight of that hard top. Specifically, the more you push it, the more the front end wants to push as well. Don’t expect this car to be nicely balanced at the limit. I never flogged the convertible enough to really test for brake fade, but I will say the upgraded brakes on the 6MT don’t seem to notice the extra weight as much as the suspension does. They will haul you down to a stop in a hurry.

Dragster: If you’re even thinking about the G37 Convertible in this capacity, you obviously aren’t buying one or even considering it. While the VQ motor has plenty of punch to launch itself into and out of traffic, a dragster it is not. Quite frankly, it feels a bit sluggish in comparison to its G37 siblings in coupe and sedan form. In reality, the G37 Convertible is quite capable and more than quick enough for day-to-day driving. Just don’t line up at a drag-strip or stoplight next to a G37 Coupe or 370Z hoping for the best. It’s best won’t be enough.

Today I had the pleasure of driving to Crest Infiniti in Plano, TX to pick up a 2010 Infiniti G37 Convertible Sport 6MT. Many thanks to Thomas Bies, the General Sales Manager at Crest, for setting this up for me. Thomas introduced me to Miles (sorry, missed the last name) and Caleb Brosin who took me through the new car owner walk-through, had me sign the release form, and turned over the keys.

As far as the styling, the pictures below speak for themselves. Click one to see the gallery. This Infiniti is absolutely gorgeous, and I am sure it will draw much attention over the weekend.

My first driving impressions on the way home were very good. The ride is firm but not harsh. The clutch and shifter feel great. The aerodynamics are great with the top down, as there is no wind buffeting on the highway. It’s also surprisingly quiet.

I have several events lined up this weekend and plan on making good use of the beautiful top-down weather over the next couple of days. Stay tuned for more quick updates on my driving experience this weekend and then a full review next week.

Once again, I made the trek to Eureka Springs, AR for the semi-annual S2ki.com Boston Mountain Tour. The many great Honda S2000 owners don’t seem to mind that I bring a couple extra doors along on their tour of possibly the largest collection of near-perfect sports car roads in America. Seriously, people make fun of Arkansas, but their mountain roads are absolutely sublime. The roads are so great, I need my track brake pads installed to keep up with all the little roadsters in the tighter sections. Needless to say, I’m ok with that.

This time my wife and 16 month old boy came along for the ride to Eureka Springs because my parents were going to be there. You might recall my dad buying a WRX recently. He also recently attended an HPDE at Phoenix International Raceway with NASA, so he was looking forward to this drive after getting to know his car a little better. My mom, wife, and kiddo explored Eureka Springs on Saturday while my dad and I chased and were chased by S2000s.

As usual, we had a blast, and I can’t wait for the Fall tour. It was especially great to look up in the mirror and see my dad rounding an apex. I’m glad we were in the mountains with a lot of twisties, because I couldn’t have stayed ahead of him with too many straight-aways. That car is quick!

Check out the full gallery for my photos.

Imagine twenty-five sports cars. Imagine over forty automotive enthusiasts. Imagine Texas roads which make sports cars smile. Imagine fine dining as well as small-town home cookin’. Imagine combining all this into a four-day experience. What you now have is the Raging Bull Texas Stampede (RBTS).

This is the seventh annual Stampede and personally my fourth year to attend. I’ve attended hundreds of driving events over the years. I’ve discussed hundreds more with other enthusiasts. I’ve even researched drives throughout the country and read many different experiences. Nothing can compare to the Stampede. Many other drives encounter great roads. Many are well planned. However, it’s the level of planning, the safety precautions, and even the intricate maps which supersede everything else. The “Tourmaster” is behind all this planning, yet always in front leading the way. We, the Stampede participants, are incredibly thankful.

I will assure you, and assure you again, that on the Stampede you will enjoy almost every ounce of performance in your car while on public roads. (Obeying all traffic laws of course!) I mentioned the safety precautions. Slow is now what has come to mind for most of you, but you need to read the beginning of this paragraph again. The list of precautions is huge and for the most part there to allow you to drive faster while staying safe. Of course, as usual, a good part of this is not being stupid and just driving within your limits. This is made easier by the fact that to attend you must be older than 25 or have had some legitimate racing experience.

Here’s how it went down…

Thursday. Since many couldn’t meet until Friday morning, Thursday was an “unofficial” day for the Raging Bull Texas Stampede VII. We met that morning, hoping the rain was done and the roads would soon clear. Unfortunately the forecast was for rain all day and through Friday. Soon the drizzle began again. While a bit disappointed, you could still see a twinge of excitement in everyone’s eyes. Well, almost everyone. I brought my dad this year. Being a retired pilot, I knew he was familiar with speed and more g-forces than we would experience over the next few days. What I didn’t know is how he’d handle not being the “pilot”. I might have seen a little apprehension in his face that morning. We had eight cars and another meeting us a few miles down the road. Luckily that morning’s drive was intended to enjoy the beautiful landscape of the Austin hill country. We did exactly that…for the entire 200 yards of visibility. We had hope though, as we were to visit Harris Hill Road’s 1.8 mile, 11-turn track.

H2H track images courtesy of Bill Jurasz.

Luckily, for the most part, the rain held off while at Harris Hill. A few others had joined the group for the afternoon that couldn’t make the morning drive. The track was wet but still a lot of fun. We started off with some classroom instruction by a couple great guys (think BMWCCA / PCA / pro-racer types). Next we headed out for some lead/follow laps, alternating 2nd position behind the instructor car. While these weren’t hot laps, they were far from one-handed coffee drinking laps. After that, everyone had the opportunity to ride along in an instructor car or as a passenger in their own car with an instructor at the wheel. I took advantage of that and moved over. My dad sat in the back, and I sat in awe at how smooth and effortlessly my Infiniti G35 was flogged around a wet track. I got a few suspension setup tips, and I learned a few different lines which were amazingly helpful on a wet track. It was beautiful. I then was fortunate enough to be one of the participants allowed to do hot laps in my own car. So I spent a good 15-20 minutes trying to recreate the earlier laps with the advantage of two less people in the car. Apparently my car also had an extra helping of oversteer which was mysteriously absent when the instructor drove. All in all, even with the rain, it was a great day. Then it was to the hotel and a great dinner with plenty of words like coil-overs, torque, and boost-controllers.

Friday. A monsoon apparently came during the night and was hovering. We gathered for the drivers’ meeting where the true identity of the Tourmaster was revealed as he stressed safety about cold performance tires and wet roads. We started off in a heavy rain and worked our way to the middle of nowhere, where we primarily would remain for the next 2-3 days. I really mean nowhere. There’s nothing out there but freaky albino deer, turkey vultures, and amazingly smooth twisty roads. Throughout the day, we all came to terms with the wet roads. Some, me included, even began to enjoy them as our tires surprised us with remarkable levels of grip. After 264 miles, with only a couple short breaks and a wonderful Italian lunch, we arrived at our destination. Hickville. Redneckville. I can’t remember the name. The lodging and dining options were limited, but to the Tourmaster’s credit, the roads nearby were just too good to not subject us to a few visions of The Shining. Regardless, there was food and a bed there, and that was all that mattered.

Saturday. An early morning was met by a certain yellow Corvette Z06 (Big Bird) being washed in the freezing cold by a cut-off hose while a few of us went for a quick run up and over a mountain and back. The roads were a bit damp, but the mountain road was sublime. Afterward, at our drivers’ meeting, our spirits were high with a forecast of sunshine for the rest of the weekend. The roads were soon dry as we bombed away toward a Tex-Mex lunch and a quick visit to the Mexican border. By this point, Big Bird had to have had at least 4 baths. That afternoon, we drove a 17 mile stretch of near-perfect pavement and high-speed sweepers. The road ended at a highway with (gasp) traffic which led to our hotel for the night. So we did what any good enthusiasts would do. We turned around, drove back 17 miles, turned around again, and drove the 17 miles a third time. On this last leg of 17 miles along with 70 or so twisty mountain highway miles back to the hotel, I let my dad drive. Keep in mind; he’s never had a sports car. The next thing I know, he’s throwing the gear lever around, smoothly pitching it into turns, gunning it out, and catching the car in front of us. Impressive. That night we had a wonderful steak dinner and a few of us hosted some of the great officers and airmen of our great United States Air Force. Wonderful conversations ensued. Raffle drawings were conducted. Someone won a set of Toyo tires. My dad won a DVD player. It was the perfect end to the perfect day of driving.

Sunday. After another drivers’ meeting and Big Bird’s 505th bath, we were back on the road. It was an absolutely gorgeous day again with even more roads almost devoid of any traffic. Only as we neared our lunch break did we encounter any other vehicles. So we just relaxed and enjoyed the pretty country as we approached some great BBQ. It felt like the old west…but with cars. As we ate, many stories were told of how we each conquered the Raging Bull over the past few days. Some said their goodbyes and went on their way. The rest of us caravanned for as long as possible before peeling off one by one toward home.

The drive home on I-35 was long, but we blended into traffic at what seemed an obnoxiously sloooowwww rate. My dad and I discussed the many great people and cars we met and admired the past few days. My dad even began to ask questions about which new cars handled well, had good acceleration, and would be good in the Kansas City and Colorado snow. We made it home and my parents went on with their usual retiree travel, heading for Phoenix for a couple months. The next thing I know, my dad and I were swapping emails with thoughts and links to car reviews and stats. Well good, at least he has an idea what he wants. I figure once they go back to Kansas City in a couple months, he’ll take his Civic out of the garage, sell it, and buy something fun.

Nine days. That’s how long it took. Nine days later he bought a 2010 Subaru WRX Premium. He wanted good handling. Its all-wheel drive system and suspension has it covered. He wanted good acceleration. 0-60 in 4.7 seconds. Covered. I guess the Civic will still be in Kansas City in March to sell in better weather.

Watch out in Maricopa County, Dad. I hear Sheriff Joe Arpaio is a tough one.

While visiting the Chevy Experience at the Texas State Fair in September, my wife and I were fortunate enough to win tickets to the NASCAR Dickies 500 race at Texas Motor Speedway. While I’ve never been a big NASCAR fan, a legitimate car guy should be excited about free tickets to any race. I was very excited. Part of the package included tickets to the Chevrolet Hospitality Chalet in the Village of Champions as well as a pit tour. Sweet!

I must say, the NASCAR experience is a unique one. I’ve been to both IRL and Grand-Am races at Texas Motor Speedway, and neither will prepare you for the seriousness of NASCAR fans. The people-watching there is world-class. I’d highly recommend attending a NASCAR race to any gear head/auto fanatic. After all, it’s a race, and it’s a lot more fun to watch in person than on TV. What makes it even better is having a scanner. You can rent one there for $30 or so, or if you have your own, $5-$10 will get yours re-programmed with all the driver/crew chief frequencies. It’s a blast to hear the driver and crew chief discuss track conditions, engine performance, and car dynamics. This is an absolute MUST HAVE for any NASCAR race.

On December 1, Infiniti held an event in Beverly Hills to reveal the much anticipated full-sized 2011 M. This fully redesigned M is an absolutely beautiful car. One might notice the design cues taken from the Essence Concept. The interior quality is arguably amongst the best in the world. Stunning. The M35 will become the M37, powered by the 3.7 liter V6 powerplant from the G37 making 330 hp and 270 lb/ft of torque. The M45 will be gone too, being replaced by the M56. The M56 gets a beastly 420 hp and 417 lb/ft of torque. Both will be available in all-wheel drive as usual. It sure seems that Infiniti is gunning pretty hard for the BMW 5 series sedans, whether intentional or not.

Infiniti also announced a few changes for the 2010 G37 Sedan. It seemed to be a bit of a small news item at this M focused event, but it was one that had my full attention. I won’t list everything but will hit on a few highlights. Most notably, the front fascia has been redesigned to be a bit more aggressive. Also, thankfully Infiniti finally ditched those horrible fog lights integrated into the headlight assembly. Now the fogs are where they should have been all along, down low. The rear-end has been subtly redesigned as well, although it’s the technology inside that will be noticed most by Average Joe. The nav system has been upgraded and now includes a 9.3GB hard drive for music, 7 inch touch-screen, real-time weather and traffic, and a restaurant guide. If that isn’t enough, you can even opt to stream mp3s over Bluetooth directly to the system. It seems these days even economy cars are getting some impressive tech, so kudos to Infiniti for a mid-cycle techno-kick to keep us nerds happy.

All in all, Infiniti has done a great job to keep the G37 exciting while we wait on a full redesign. Is that coming in 2011? Who knows, but this 2010 G37 remains one of the best luxury sports sedans on the road. If Santa is kind enough to drop $37,000 in my stocking this year, it wouldn’t hurt my feelings to spend 2010 in a new 6MT Sedan.

For the past few years, I’ve been somewhat of an honorary Honda S2000 (S2ki.com) club member in North Texas. I really enjoy the events they organize. Initially I somewhat fit in, at least having a convertible, with my Nissan 350Z Roadster. Then the baby came, and now I have the G35 sedan. While missing the open air aspect a bit, I always look forward to actually keeping up with the crazy fun S2000s in my family car. Saturday was to be the 7th semi-annual Boston Mountain Tour (BMT), organized by the OK and AR S2ki.com clubs, beginning in Eureka Springs, AR.

Due to the distance from North Texas to Eureka Springs, a tour to the tour was planned for Friday. Someone affectionately named this drive the Pre-Boston Mountain Tour Tour (PBMTT). Friday morning at 6:00 am came early after a late night of last minute preparation and packing. The car was packed and prepped for a couple hard days of driving to and in the Boston Mountains of NW Arkansas. By 8:00 am, cars were arriving in Melissa, TX ready for some fun. The majority of these cars were infiltrators as well.

Thirteen of us left for Eureka Springs that Friday morning around 8:45 am. We had plans to meet one more before leaving Texas, and three more in SW Arkansas. We had 425 miles to cover and wanted to do so before dark. Unfortunately the infamous and annoying daylight savings time change the previous week was making this much more difficult. The goal for the day was to be rounding curves more than driving in a straight line. I think we succeeded in doing so. It was a wonderful day on great roads filled with high speed sweepers and tight twisties, both on and off-camber. Some of the downhill sections had me wishing I had swapped to track/street brake pads like I did for the last event. But even with a brief downhill section of having to adjust for a little brake fade, I had a wonderful day of enjoying a very fun route which did not include a single Interstate or major highway. Unfortunately though, DST won the daylight race…by less than an hour. It was dark when we arrived in Eureka Springs, hungry and tired.

Saturday morning was the beginning of the actual Boston Mountain Tour, and as usual it was impeccably organized. We began with a parking lot full of amazing cars and drivers full of anticipation. After the drivers’ meeting, we hit the road in three groups. The first BMT I attended last spring was over many of the same roads. Regardless, the full day of driving was beyond fun and on some of the best roads ever made for sports cars. The highlight for me was most of the morning where I chased the leader of my group in his new S2000 CR. Needless to say, I had to concentrate a bit and keep it really smooth to keep up in the twisties. That guy could drive! We had a morning and afternoon break, photo opportunities of all the cars, and a great lunch and dinner. Thank you to all the S2ki.com members who made this event happen. I can’t wait for the next one. Maybe then I’ll go check out the Rowdy Beaver.

It may seem odd, but for years I associated the Camaro with speed. It’s true. I had no feelings of malcontent, and I did not associate the Camaro with wife-beater t-shirts, mullets, and bondo. It looked good, had a great V8, was relatively comfortable, and provoked driving fast. That was a win in my book. It still is to some degree.

My entire first-hand Camaro experience was with a 1989 Camaro RS which had the 5.0 liter V8 option. By today’s yard stick, the engine’s 170 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque is quite meager. But in 1990, even short the 70 horsepower which was available in the IROC-Z’s 5.7 liter V8, it was a monster to this high school student.

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon in North Texas when a friend picked me up in his new RS. I immediately was addicted to the torque pushing me into the seat. The next thing you knew we were flying along at 135mph, T-tops removed, and my hair blowing in the wind. That’s right. I had hair once. Moving on…

Now let’s fast forward almost 20 years. Everything has changed. Here’s where the wife-beaters, mullets, and bondo come into play. In the 7 years following Chevrolet killing the Camaro in 2002 after 35 years of production, its reputation went drastically downhill. There still was that distant memory of high school, but that memory was all too often overshadowed by a giant mullet cutting me off in traffic with his bondo-covered Camaro apparently fitted with a smoke screen “feature”.

A few weeks ago, everything changed again. Chevrolet delivered Burnout Radio a 2010 Camaro 2SS, and I drew the long straw to drive it the first few days. This is the 5th Generation of the Camaro, and I’ve yet to find someone who dislikes the way the way this car looks. Every curve and angle blend together to make one of the best looking American cars produced in recent decades. This 2010 model urges you to reminisce of the first four generations while remaining wholly modern in design. Chevrolet nailed the styling, pure and simple.

Here is my experience:

As I slide into the driver’s seat, I am first amazed at how comfortable I am with no adjustments. I make a few seat adjustments and surprisingly quickly have the perfect driving position. The layout of the cockpit caters to the driver and everything is well within reach without taking my eyes far from the road. While I do like the gauge layout and design, the speedometer and tachometer need some work. First they are annoyingly vague with their sequoia sized needles. I want to know exactly how fast I’m going at a glance and not a 5 mph estimate. Yeah, yeah, I know there’s a digital readout option in the driver information center (DIC), but maybe I want something else on that screen. There are plenty of other good options to display there. Anyway, the gauges just feel a bit of an afterthought. Secondly, a few times the speedo even seems to stick a little while decelerating. It jumps down in 5-7 mph increments rather harshly instead of a fluid motion under braking. Otherwise, the gauges and DIC readout are very well placed and designed. The DIC is very easily navigated by controls on the blinker stalk. Most of the rest of the interior looks great. There is nifty ambient lighting in the top edge of the door panel inserts, which unfortunately is seemingly made of CD case plastic. The design continues across the dash, but for whatever reason the lighting does not. I am assured it is not broken and is not actually lit. Odd.

Now it is time to really drive this puppy. As I roll out, the clutch requires little effort while still feeling solid. It engages smoothly and quickly as a proper muscle car should. The 6-speed transmission is smooth with enough of a snick to know I am properly in gear, albeit with a bit of a long throw. Unfortunately though, there’s no good way to hold the shifter. It just feels peculiar in my hand regardless of how I hold it. The same goes for the steering wheel if you’re the 9 and 3 type (as all should be). Both are a bit awkward.

Next is the requisite downshift and foot to the floor to merge on the freeway. The 6.2 liter LS3 V8 roars to life, punches me into the seat with 400 lb-ft of torque, builds to its full 426 horsepower, and all thoughts of the aforementioned awkwardness go out the windows as I launch up the ramp. The colossal acceleration is well beyond anything I experienced that Sunday afternoon in 1990. That aside, this Camaro is different somehow. It is more composed…a bit mature even.

As I amble through traffic, I plug my almost dead iPhone into the USB port to give it a little charge on the way home. Much to my surprise, a few seconds later, “Trent’s iPhone” displays on the screen and my stored music begins to play automatically. Brilliant! I turn up the Boston Acoustics audio system equipped in this 2SS model. It sounds crisp and clean even at 70mph with windows down and sunroof open. It’s at this point that I notice the exhaust note could use a little tweaking, as it’s a bit of a nasal sound when behind the wheel. And since I’m nit-picking here, a little more volume under normal acceleration would be nice for those who like to roll the windows down and shift by ear. I have no complaints outside the cabin though, as a quick jaunt through a tunnel sounds great.

Yes, the 2010 Camaro SS has a few faults. Yes, it still has a bit of a back-woods reputation. Yet this is just the first year back from retirement. The Camaro will improve and will overcome the stereotype. Once again I am in love with the Camaro, although even with no hair I do miss the T-tops. The Chevrolet Camaro is back in the muscle car fight. Welcome.

Over the next few days, I was able to experience the Camaro in various scenarios. Unfortunately it rained almost the entire time, although I luckily got one small window of dry roads to explore the Camaro’s capabilities.

Ugh. More rain

THE RUNDOWN:

Rush-hour commuter: The comfortable seats, low RPM torque, and high gearing make bumper-to-bumper traffic easy. Throw it in 2nd or 3rd and leave it there. Gas mileage isn’t great, but if you’re buying an SS then it’s most likely not a priority. While on the gas topic though, the fuel cap needs a better hook to hold it while fueling. It is horribly small and rarely actually prevents the gas cap from hanging loose on the paint.

Highway cruiser: The comfortable seats and high gearing are great here as well. With the engine spinning less than 2,000 RPM at 80mph, it gobbles up the miles with ease. On-center steering feel could use a little adrenaline kick though, as it’s a bit vague.

Grocery getter: I wouldn’t advise going to Sam’s Club and grabbing a flatbed, but for an average grocery purchase there is reasonable space in the trunk. The back seats are easily accessible as well if the space is needed.

Family & friends hauler: If you only have friends under 6ft tall, you’ll all be happy with the occasional back-seat passenger. Notice I didn’t say passengerS. Unless you’re both jockeys, an average-sized adult won’t fit behind the driver. For those with kids, there is plenty of room for them even with a booster seat. If you have a child still in a rear-facing safety seat as I do, adult passengers over 5ft tall should avoid you like swine flu and take their own car. The passenger seat has to be fully forward and completely upright in order to fit the safety seat in back. Surprisingly though, it was relatively easy to install the safety seat in the back.

Occasional hoon-mobile: I find the SS suspension to be quite competent. The suspension is compliant, yet responsive and communicative with minimal body roll. As I stated above, steering feel does need some dialing in regarding on-center feel, which is a bit lifeless. However it is nicely weighted and communicative once you chuck it into a turn. If you take it into that turn smoothly and with a bit of reserve, there’s enough suspension compliance to get hard on the throttle on exit. Yet if you throw it in hard, you’ll get the obligatory initial understeer and a nice progressive switch to oversteer if you get on the go-pedal. I am quite pleased with the progressive nature near the limit. If one is to press the StabiliTrak button in front of the shifter once, traction control is disabled to allow tire spin while the stability control keeps you from getting sideways. If one is to press it twice, Competitive Mode allows a generous amount of tire spin and slip angle before bringing the tail back in line. It will make lucky bad drivers look good. Unlucky bad drivers will still crash. Competitive Mode also enables launch control. It’s as simple as holding the fun pedal down while the ECU limits engine RPM and dumping the clutch. Finally, holding the button for about 5 seconds will defeat all traction and stability systems and let you have your way with the Camaro.

Track toy: Most of the characteristics which make the Camaro SS a capable hoon-mobile apply here as well. The pedals are a bit widely spaced for easy heel-toe downshifts in my size 9s, but it’s manageable. The giant Brembo brakes work as expected and haul all 3849 lbs down quickly with good pedal feel. Modulating the brakes under hard braking is no problem. The Camaro handles well but is no Miata, so a tight course or autocross won’t suit it too well. Like usual with many production vehicles, a few modifications would be needed for a frequent track car, but the Camaro SS should easily handle a track day every now and then with no problem.

Dragster: Like all Camaros of yore, this car is at home on a drag strip. All but the novice will find faster times not using launch control. The engine and transmission beg to slammed through the gears and the suspension is compliant enough to give you a little of that muscle car squat under acceleration.

For those who aren’t familiar, the Infiniti Essence Concept car is a gas/electric hybrid vehicle utilizing Infiniti’s “3D Motor” technology. This electric motor provides 158 bhp and twice the torque of your run-of-the-mill unit. Combine this with another 434 bhp from the twin-turbo 3.7 liter V6 and you’ve got a nice-sized 592 bhp and can get almost 30 mph in combined city/hwy driving. You’ll notice plenty of intriguing things as you look through the photo gallery, including that the Essence has no mirrors. There are 6 cameras to do that job. One on the roof, one on each A-pillar, one in each quarter-panel vent, and one on the trunk lid.

Ever since I saw the press release on the Infiniti Essence Concept and read it would eventually come to Dallas, I was on a quest to find out the location, date, and time it would be here. That quest ended a week or so ago when I received a response from @InfinitiNews on Twitter. The Essence was to arrive at Hotel ZaZa on September 24. I showed up and met Josh with Infiniti, who eloquently explained more about this hybrid beauty. A few photos were all I could take before leaving for another event, but Josh informed me there was an Infiniti owners event there later that evening. Perfect. I conveniently own an Infiniti G35 and could then get some night-time shots as well. So I swung by later on for a few minutes and then left with some more pictures and some champagne in my belly. It was a good night.

You can even drive a Bumblebee Camaro around the course. Unfortunately, “no wheel spin” is the rule…something about not wanting mangled fenders and flattened fences. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the Chevrolet lineup. So after you get some fried butter, stop on by. If you’re on Twitter, follow @GMTexas and let them know you’re coming!
